The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. It is the principal global policy-making body dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women. Every year, representatives of Member States gather at United Nations Headquarters in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide.
The 55th session of the CSW took place in New York from February 22 to March 4, 2011. During these two weeks, government officials, representatives of the United Nations and civil society, the media and Non Government Organizations (NGOs) met at United Nations Headquarters to share experiences and good practices, as well as agree on priority actions to deal with continuous obstacles in order to accelerate progress towards equality.
The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) is an NGO, and a team of six represented the BWA at the CSW. The team members were Raquel Contreras, president of the BWA Women’s Department (WD); Patsy Davis, Executive Director of the BWA WD; Linda Weber, president of the North American Baptist Women’s Union (NABWU); Barbara Anderson, president of the American Baptist Women’s Ministries (ABWM); Virginia Holmstrom, Executive Director ABWM; and Jasmine Turner, AB Girls Convener.
